The Rosary: The Joyful Mysteries
Lessons and Collects for the Joyful Mysteries of the Holy Rosary
- The First Joyful Mystery: The Annunciation of Our Lord
- The Lesson: In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you!" But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God." And Mary said, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." (Luke 1:26-33, 35, 38)
- The Collect: Pour your grace into our hearts, O Lord, that we who have known the incarnation of your Son Jesus Christ, announced by an angel to the Virgin Mary, may by his cross and passion be brought to the glory of his resurrection; who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (BCP page 240)
- Our Father, ... Hail Mary, ... (10 times) Glory be to the Father ...
- The Second Joyful Mystery: Mary arose and went
- The Lesson: Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard
the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord." (Luke 1:39-45)
- The Collect: Father in heaven, by your grace the virgin mother of your incarnate Son was blessed in bearing him, but still more blessed in keeping your word: Grant us who honor the exaltation of her lowliness to follow the example of her devotion to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the
Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (BCP page 240)
- Our Father, ... Hail Mary, ... (10 times) Glory be to the Father ...
- The Third Joyful Mystery: The Nativity of Our Lord
- The Lesson: In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered. And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. (Luke 2: 1, 3-7 )
- The Collect: Almighty God, you have given your only-begotten Son to take our nature on him, and to be born of a pure virgin: Grant that we, who have been born again and made your children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by your Holy Spirit; through our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom with you and the same Spirit be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen. (BCP page 213)
- Our Father, ... Hail Mary, ... (10 times) Glory be to the Father ...
- The Fourth Joyful Mystery: The Presentation of Our Lord
- The Lesson: There was a man in Jerusalem , whose name was Simeon ... And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And inspired by the Spirit he came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, "Lord, now lettest thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation which thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for the glory of thy people Israel."
And his father and mother marveled at what was said about him. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, "Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against (and a sword will pierce your own soul also), that the thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed." (Luke 2:25-35)
- The Collect: Almighty and everliving God, we humbly pray that, as your only-begotten Son was presented in the temple, so may we be presented to you with pure and clean hearts by Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (BCP page 239)
- Our Father, ... Hail Mary, ... (10 times) Glory be to the Father ...
- The Fifth Joyful Mystery: The Finding of Our Lord in the Temple
- The Lesson: Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went according to custom; and when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be with the company they went a day's journey, and they sought him among their kinfolk and acquaintances; and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions; and all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. And when they saw him they were astonished; and his mother asked him, "Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously." And he said to them, "How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" And they did not understand the saying which he spoke to them. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. (Luke 2:41-51)
- The Collect: Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours, utterly dedicated to you; and then use us, we pray you, as you will, and always to your glory and the welfare of your people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. (BCP page 832)
- Our Father, ... Hail Mary, ... (10 times) Glory be to the Father ...
- The Commendation
- Remembering our most holy, most pure, most blessed and glorious Lady, the Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary with all the Saints, let us commend ourselves and one another, and our whole life to Christ our God.
- Optional Concluding Prayers:
- Salve Regina: Hail, Holy Queen, mother of mercy; hail, our life, our sweetness and our hope! To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate your eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement,
O loving,
O sweet
Virgin Mary:
V/ Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God
R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
- Memorare (A prayer of St. Bernard of Clairvaux): Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that
anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help or sought your intercession,
was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O
Virgin of virgins, my mother. To you I come, before you I stand,
sinful and sorrowful, O mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions,
but in your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen.
